Welcome to my gallery! My name is Joan Ines Garcia and I am a painter, illustrator and stamp maker. I work primarily in acrylics, gouache, watercolors and ink. Using vibrant, energetic colors in my work, I enjoy depicting nature, people and motifs that are joyful and often part of everyday life.
I am from a long line of makers and am lucky enough to be surrounded by creative, artistic people who continually provide inspiration. My mother was a seamstress and quilter and she instilled in me a love for color and pattern and an appreciation of things made by hand. As a little girl, she would send me to look in her fabric drawer for colorful remnants from which to create (and keep me busy). I always incorporate a piece of sewing pattern-tissue in my paintings as a way to remember her through my art. An ample supply of crayons, paper and paint was always available and I was happiest when I was lost in my imaginative world. My husband designs interiors so I am always surrounded by beautiful fabrics, tiles and wallpapers. As a musician, my son has inspired me by his passion and commitment to music.
I have also been inspired by children’s book illustrations since I was a little girl. As a recently retired elementary school teacher, I have spent years reading wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated stories to children. I am inspired by authors and illustrators of children’s books and still love reading stories illustrated by Tomie DePaola, Patricia Polacco, Lois Ehlert and Eric Carle (among a long list of others.)
I like to use my art to put a thoughtful and positive energy into the world.
I hope you feel this when viewing my work.
